Tuckahoe Teachers Association

Current TTA Contract (2008-2011)

Even before the mission statement of “A promise to prepare for tomorrow” was coined, the TTA has always believed that our job as educators is to plant the seeds of knowledge and curiosity.

Initiatives such as balanced literacy, spiraled math and science, differentiated instruction, and small class size have all contributed to meeting the needs of each child.  The recent addition of portfolio assessment, which follows a student from kindergarten to middle school, will provide each teacher with a genuine snapshot of each student’s development.  Exposure to the arts is fostered beginning in kindergarten.

With all of these initiatives, the hope is to provide the students with a seamless transition to middle school.   Here, a strong emphasis is placed on both reading and language arts.  Responsibility is placed on the students to become more independent with their studies, preparing them for their high school career.

The secondary experience, beginning in the ninth grade, paves the way to higher education and career opportunities.  A vigorous course of study is provided in all the major content areas, such as math, science, information literacy, social studies, English, computer science, foreign language, and the arts.

Research has proven that students learn best not only when their academic needs are met, but when their emotional, physical and social needs are addressed as well.  Utilizing a “whole child” approach, the health and well-being of each student is addressed from kindergarten through twelfth grade in physical education and health classes.  In addition, the support staff promotes social and emotional development and growth.  They encourage the student’s ability to problem solve, to communicate in an age-appropriate manner, and to resolve any conflicts that they may face.  Counseling and intervention are available and provided to all students.

Teachers also recognize that learning takes place outside the classroom.  We are a physical presence at many sporting events, plays, special programs, concerts and club events.

The TTA has always believed our standards far exceed those given by the state.  Beginning in third grade and ending with Regents and A.P. exams, our students face the New York State testing challenges head on.

We pride ourselves in working hand-in-hand with the parents of all students so that together, we all take responsibility to prepare our students for tomorrow.
