TMS 8th-Graders Step Up to Volunteer

At an 8th-grade assembly on November 15, Tuckahoe Middle School students learned about volunteerism and the value of community service.

Presented by the non-profit organization Volunteer New York, students were taught how to take action and were encouraged to “be the change” by volunteering locally. As their first step in supporting the community, they created cards that will be added to care packages and sent to troops abroad.

To further emphasize the importance of supporting one's community, each student  was given a “VOLLO” bracelet as they pledged to volunteer for at least one hour in their community toward a local cause that they believe in. The bracelets serve as a reminder of the students' commitment to give back to or impact the world around them in a meaningful and positive way. After completing their community service, the children can choose to keep wearing the bracelet or to give it to a friend so that he or she can also make the promise to volunteer locally.
